Be a Quality Commenter!

WALT: give quality comments to blog posts

We have been learning about the purpose of commenting on blogs and why it is important to give a quality comment.
The reason that we write a blog is for people to read it! We can show that we have read and understood something by writing a quality comment for a post.
A quality comment has the following things:
  1. Correct spelling and punctuation.
  2. A comment that relates to the post.
  3. A question or additional piece of information
  4. No personal information or details.
A comment like "Great story!" might show enthusiasm but it doesn't give the reader any extra information. Instead you could write something like "Wow! Your story about camping in the summer holidays was really interesting. I laughed at the bit where you wrote about your tent falling down. Did it stay up for the rest of your holiday?"

I found this great video by some students in Mrs Yollis' Class in California. They are great at commenting on blogs! They have heaps of other cool stuff on their blog too. You should check it out and comment on it!

Reading Week 9

For your reading task this week, I'd like you to comment on this post. Look at the criteria above and make sure you are writing a quality comment!

Reading Week 7- Questioning

We Are Learning To Identify Different Types of Questions

There are four different kinds of questions we might have to answer when we are reading. It is very important to be able to answer these different kinds of questions to help show that you understand what you are reading.

See if you can get Mum or Dad to help you come up with some different kinds of questions for the book you are reading at home this week.

  • "Right There"

Questions found right in the text that ask students to find the one right answer located in one place as a word or a sentence in the passage.

Example: Who is Frog's friend? Answer: Toad

  • "Think and Search"

Questions based on the recall of facts that can be found directly in the text. Answers are typically found in more than one place, thus requiring students to "think" and "search" through the passage to find the answer.

Example: Why was Frog sad? Answer: His friend was leaving.

  • "Author and You"

Questions require students to use what they already know, with what they have learned from reading the text. Student's must understand the text and relate it to their prior knowledge before answering the question.

Example: How do think Frog felt when he found Toad? Answer: I think that Frog felt happy because he had not seen Toad in a long time. I feel happy when I get to see my friend who lives far away.

  • "On Your Own"

Questions are answered based on a students prior knowledge and experiences. Reading the text may not be helpful to them when answering this type of question.

Example: How would you feel if your best friend moved away? Answer: I would feel very sad if my best friend moved away because I would miss her.

World Environment Day

The 5th of June is Word Environment Day.

Today is World Environment Day, set aside by the United Nations Environment Programme with a special focus on global food waste. The UN Food and Agriculture Programme estimates that globally, one third of all food is wasted every year. In developing countries, more than 40% of food waste happens on farms, during storage, and in processing. But in first world countries, about the same amount of food waste occurs in homes and in stores due to greed, over purchase, dislike of food which is close to expiry date, blemished or bruised. We need to make wise choices about what we buy and use to prevent food wastage.
The UN estimates that 70% of the world’s freshwater resources go in to global food production, which also accounts for 80% of the world’s deforestation.

For more information on World Environment Day click here

Reading

Read the information above and as a comment to this post suggest two or more ways that we could reduce food wastage in our homes or at school.

Extra for experts

Create a graph or diagram that represents the amount of food wasted in developed countries.

Plurals

Plurals and Singular
In spelling we learnt how to add an S to a word. We tend to do this when there is more than one of something, though not all plurals end in S.

Watch this video about plurals and play the plural fishing game.

This Website also has a game about turning a singular into a plural

Let's Cook!

Year 4 Menu and Cooking Show assignment
Due Monday 7th April

To show our learning from the term we are designing healthy menus that incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables. We are going to use the drama skills that we have been developing to create a film that shows our learning.

 1. Design a menu with starter, main and desert.

Describe each dish on your menu using interesting vocabulary that will entice your diners to choose that dish.

Each dish must have at least one seasonal fruit or vegetable in it. We will write this in class.

 2. Choose one dish off your menu to cook in your 'cooking show'.

You will film yourself making the dish in the style of a cooking show. You must edit your film ready to share with the class. Parents can assist with this.

You may work with a buddy to create the cooking show but you both must appear in the film.

3. We will celebrate our learning with an in-class film festival and shared lunch where parents are invited to come watch the films.

  Success Criteria For your film

-Present with a clear, confident voice
-Face the camera while presenting
-Whatever you are filming needs to be the centre of the shot. Frame your shot carefully.
-Use appropriate language while presenting (such as the interesting adjectives we have used in writing)
- Use a range of camera shots including an extreme close up of your seasonal food
- Clearly show and explain the steps needed to create your dish
- Give some information about your dish, why you chose it and the ingredients you chose
-Edit your show so that it is succinct and interesting.
-You may want to add text over the footage to list your ingredients or steps.
