Athletics Day

We had a great time at Athletics last week. Well done to everyone who competed, but particularly to our relay team who won!
Naomi, Zara, Agostina and Joseph all placed in at least one event. Ka pai!

Structures Structures Structures

Room 34 has been making lots of structures. We have made newspaper structures. We made structures in the Gully and the only manmade items we could use were one tarpaulin per group.
We had a design brief for each structure. A design brief is when you are given quick instructions about the function of the structure you are building.
For our newspaper structures the brief was that it had to hold up a dictionary for at least 30 seconds. Some structures could hold up to 14 books!
Our shelters in the Gully had to have enough space to keep the whole team from getting wet if it rained. We tested them with water guns.

Weekly Update Week 1

What a fantastic first week!
We fit so much in this week including a Diwali performance and a powhiri to greet the Surpell visitors.
In Maths we have been learning about place value.
In Writing we have been describing a moment in time and learning about assessing our writing.
In Topic we have been introduced to structures. We even looked at structures as part of our homework. Check out the structures that some people made for their homework!

Place Value

In our ikan Maths knowledge test we came out weakest at place value so we are going to be doing lots of practise!

What is Place Value?

Place value is the value of where a digit is in a number.

Finding a number's place value: When finding the place value of a particular number, it helps to write out exactly what the number means. Listen as it is explained in this video by Khan Academy.

Week 9 update

It was the Art Exhibition this week and we all really enjoyed seeing the amazing art that was done throughout the school this term.
We made some delicious food in garden to table. I really liked the pesto dip. Yum!
In Reading we have been talking about quality commenting. We would really like to make our blog more interactive so please comment on posts that you like. We will try to reply to you!
In Math we have been learning about chance and probability. This is a great topic as we get to play lots of games of chance!
In Mandarin we have been learning how to buy something in a shop. See the video below.

Be a Quality Commenter!

WALT: give quality comments to blog posts

We have been learning about the purpose of commenting on blogs and why it is important to give a quality comment.
The reason that we write a blog is for people to read it! We can show that we have read and understood something by writing a quality comment for a post.
A quality comment has the following things:

1. Correct spelling and punctuation.
2. A comment that relates to the post.
3. A question or additional piece of information
4. No personal information or details.

A comment like "Great story!" might show enthusiasm but it doesn't give the reader any extra information. Instead you could write something like "Wow! Your story about camping in the summer holidays was really interesting. I laughed at the bit where you wrote about your tent falling down. Did it stay up for the rest of your holiday?"

I found this great video by some students in Mrs Yollis' Class in California. They are great at commenting on blogs! They have heaps of other cool stuff on their blog too. You should check it out and comment on it!
