It's Sea Week!

It is Sea Week!

Seaweek 2014 will take place from 1-9 March 2014. The theme is “Our fragile, finite taonga – be alert to the fragility of the marine environment and its treasures. Kia mataara! Tiakina te au o te moana, he kōpīpī tōna.

for homework research what our responsibilities are when we go fishing. Look at the Ministry of Primary Industries website for fact sheets specially for kids.

Te Papa has a great website about the colossal squid!
2. In your reading book make a fact sheet with at least 4 facts about the giant squid.

  1. We need to stop catching millions of fish every year or else there will be o fish left.
    * don't fish marine reserves so that fish stocks can grow back to nomal levels.

    * make sure that the fish you caught is big enough to eat.

    * protect the cleanness of water that is going down the drains and the water in the sea

  2. I learnt that we should stick to the fishing rules , only catch as much as you are allowed and put the little fish back in the water so they can grow up.
    look after the ocean by putting rubbish in the bin so fish do not die.

  3. If you fish in New Zealand you can only:
    . catch fish of a certain size
    . catch a limited number
    If you don't you are breaking the rules.

  4. Do not litter off boats or beaches, the fish may get tangled in the rubbish or think it is food and choke on it and die.
    Don't take more fish than you are allowed
    Make sure you know the rules for sizes of fish.
    Use the correct fishing gear allowed, like the right size hooks and nets.

  5. the responsibility The snapper which is most common to catch has to be 27cms to be legal.
    if your catch is not legal and if you keep it your boat will be confiscated large fine and even go to jail.

  6. collosal squid eat tooth fish.They live in the depths of the ocean.collosal squid can see in the dark very well.

  7. To protect the sea we need to stop littering, be carful what we put down our sinks. Measure the fish to make sure they are big enough, check the fish that they are not native and only get what you can eat.

  8. To look after the sea use less plastic, recycle and bring shopping bags. We could have less boats fishing every day. Have rubbish bins on all the beaches. By Rosa

  9. When you go fishing it is responsible to not take more fish than you are allowed and you will get a fine or go to jail. Your not to leave your rubbish.

    •the maximum number of fish you can take of a particular species
    •the minimum size of the holes in nets (mesh sizes), if you are net fishing
    •what kind of gear may be used (for example, whether you are allowed to use pots, or how many hooks you can have on a line)

  11. 1- You check if the fish are the right size or you can get a fine if they are too small
    2- Do not litter in the ocean or it can kill the sea creatures
    3- Make sure you dont catch more than the daily limit

  14. We have fishing rules because otherwise there
    would be no fish left. Every day there is a limit of fish you can catch and you get a fine if you catch to many fish .Do not POLUTE the oceans because fish will die. It is sea week !!!!!!

    Only catch a few fish otherwise they will die out.
    You can give fish away but can`t sell them.
    DON`T POLLUTE the fish will die!

  16. Protect our seas by not throwing litter into the sea which will pollute the water. If you see anything polluting the water ie: oil leaks, sewage (even dead sealife ie: whale/dolphin etc) contact someone immediately who can help prevent the spreading of such dangerous items in our awesome waters!

  20. *don't drop litter because it pollutes the ocean.

    *if you drop a plastic bag, it will flow through the drain and it will reach the ocean. A turtle might think it's a jellyfish, and eat it.
